LOL, NO DOUBT! At the end of that movie I turned to my buddy and I was "Oh,?! Okay, thanks for that story."
I guess 1. the father was molesting the girl. 2. The girl wasn't telling anyone and harboring these feeling that manifested into EVIL and terrorized the family (SILLY) and 3. The modern day family, who you pretty much forget about, is directly linked to the family in the past and, I guess, because this is where Hollywood comes in, the haunting is hereditary because it's happening ALL OVER AGAIN!!!
The moral of the story is; Little girls, if your daddy is touching you in the "no no" spot tell mommy and/or anyone else who will listen before the boggy man comes and really shakes things up.

Okay, when the mother heard her daughter, and woke up and her husband wasn't in bed, he was rapping his daughter. The daughter's soul left her body because he(the father) stole her innocence. It was her own soul that was possessing her to make her remember what happened to her. And it was her soul that was killing her father. As soon as she remembered what happened, she herself finished him off while her mother sat there and watched. Then, the other mother and daughter that they showed at the very begging of the movie, her daughter was being rapped by her father and it was the mother's responsibility to stop him.

I think they were living in the same house that the Bells lived in. The girl found the journal in the attic. My best guess.
