In the late 70s my dad sold a gas gadget that put water into the air filter, does anyone remember the name?

I'm guessing that you speak of "vapor injection" or "water injection". It's a small nozzle that mounts in the air cleaner intake and sprays a fine mist of water, sometimes mixed with alcohol or some mystery substance into the airstream, which cools the intake charge and helps your car run better. You can still get it. Google "water injector" or "water injection" or something like that. use your imagination.
