The Dutch East India Company came to Indonesia in the 1600 but it wasn't until 1798 that the Dutch formally colonized or ruled Indonesia. Then during WWII the Japanese occupied the country. On Aug 17, 1945 with strategic help from the Japanese, Indonesia declared independence. However, the Dutch fought this and only four years later on Dec 27, 1949 was Indonesia's independence officially recognized.

The Indonesian Declaration of Independence was officially proclaimed at 10.00 a.m. sharp on Friday, August 17, 1945. The declaration marked the start of a four year diplomatic and armed-resistance struggle called the National Revolution, fighting against the forces of the Netherlands until it officially acknowledged Indonesia's independence in 1949.
