People do that to steal a person's identity, take control of the other person's computer, erase files, completely destroy the computer, etc. Just make sure never to give your e-mail address when a pop up says that you're a winner or other stupid questions.

Viruses are just misunderstood programs ;). They exist because someone created them. Some viruses were originally for cleanup purposes and to wipe out hard drive and certain information, however the usage was not clear so people used it and deleted files they did not tend to delete. Other times viruses are created solely for destruction of property because of "fun", "fame", money, or spite.
