Iron Butterfly Theme ... loved it from the first moment I heard it. Very sexy song in 1968 -69 (the days of black lights 'n posters on the wall, hippies 'n love beads, love-in's ...sit-in's and Woodstock). You can hear it here, though you might need the plug-in...then turn it up, close your eyes and listen:

All time favorite group is Moody Blues. Very few writers express themselves as eloquently as Justin Hayward, with the possible exception of Jim Morrison and Bruce Springsteen; very few musicians attain the level of musical expertise shared by Graeme Edge, John Lodge, Mike Pinder and Ray Thomas. (Denny Laine and Clint Warwick left the band in 1966, replaced by Hayward and Lodge)
They were the first to produce a 'concept' album; they did it in less than one week, and it became one of the biggest selling albums of all time. 'Days of Future Passed' had such beautiful, mystical lyrics and spoken poetry that many other groups began to emulate the style.
I'd be hard pressed to say whether 'Tuesday Afternoon' or 'Nights in White Satin' would be my all-time-favorite song. Both are on 'Days of Future Passed.'
Forty years has not changed my mind; and although some songs have certainly moved me, no others have displaced 'Tuesday Afternoon' or 'Nights In White Satin.'
To use a 60's phrase: both groups were, indeed, heavy.
I guess I'll climb down off my soapbox now ..

My favorite band is Chicago. Adding a horn section to the group was unique and wonderful. It made a sound at the time that was completely different from anyone else. Some other favorites were The Moody Blues, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, etc.

Mudvayne - The deeper lyricism than most artists, as well as the abstract time signatures always got me. By far my favorite.
36 Crazyfists - The emotional depth without the "emo" sound always impressed me about them.
Into Eternity - Insane guitar stylings with a good mixture of death and clean vocals, and something to talk about. The guys from Into Eternity should never fail to impress.
There's a tip of the iceburg for ya.

Radiohead - the quality and diversity of their sound gives me goosebumps
Smashing Pumpkins - anything before and including Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, they just rock.
The Beatles for obvious reasons
The Cure - I grew up listening to them via my Dad, they're just awesome
The Smiths
Portishead - unique and so so good, only two studio albums so far but almost every song is good, and a lots are excellent.
So many more but no time to name them all.
