I wish I had a little more info on what you needed on your report. Are you comparing and contrasting or just trying to compare the two best.
Anyway, I'll stick with the question and answer that I feel the two best baseball players in history are Babe Ruth (as stated) and Ted Williams.
These two players are very good players to compare each other to. They have the #1 and #2 highest slugging percentage in baseball. They both had a very comparable career batting average (Ruth-.342; Williams-.344) They both hit for power, drove in runs as well as hit for average.
They both are Hall of famers and both played on highly recognizable teams (Yankees and the Red Sox) ( Although Babe Ruth played for the Red Sox early in his career...I hope you don't dink me for that since you wanted two different teams).
There's one thing about Ted Williams though. He left baseball for three years between 1943-1945 during WWII in the prime of his career. What numbers would he have put up? No one will ever know.
Then again, Babe Ruth was primarily a pitcher for the first six years of his career. What bigger numbers could he have put up if he were a position player for those years? No one will ever know.
A good link for stats on both players is at MLB.com:

Good luck on your report.

you're good on Babe Ruth - his impact on the game towers over anyone else.
2nd place would be a tough choice; if you want a pitcher, I'd go with Walter Johnson. For a batter, it could be Honus Wagner, Ted Williams, Willie Mays, or Barry Bonds (ignoring the steroid issue). It's rather difficult to compare players of different eras fairly, simply because they were playing the games against different competition and under different conditions.

Since you are limited to two, you might consider a position player, George Herman "Babe" Ruth, Jr., and a pitcher, Denton True "Cy" Young, arguably the two most prominent players from the earlier days. If you want to keep it more modern then Willie Howard Mays, Jr., and Warren Edward Spahn and if you want to write about current players, Jose Alberto Pujols and Gregory Alan Maddux. I'd go with the Babe and Cy.

I will give you 3, you pick. Ruth, Mays, and Aaron. I would not go with shoeless joe there are dozens that would be in front of him. For a comparison I would go with Bonds and Ruth or Ruth and Aaron.

Babe Ruth is the greatest player of all time by any objective measure. In my opinion, the second greatest is Willie Mays.

If I had to pick two, one hitter and one pitcher, the batter would have to be Willie Mays, who excelled in all aspects of batting for average, for power, for speed and for defence.
The pitcher would be Sandy Koufax, who if not for arthritis at age 30, might have broken more records in an extended career. I saw Sandy pitch and in his last 5 years, he was something like 110-30, with an ERA of around 2.00, and this against all of the greatest hitters of his day: Aaron, Mays, Clemente, etc.

You cannot limit it to just two players. Aaron, Mays, Mantle, Ruth, Ted Williams, Joe DiMaggio, Jackie Robinson, and on and on.....
