I am thinking of taking a tour to Tanzania which would include Gombe, Ngorongoro Crater, Serengeti....Never been outside US and would appreciate any tips or thoughts, great time or disappointments, of people who have already been there.

I am from TZ too, I am sorry abt the "patel's" experience but you should know TZ is a wonderful place. You have chosen the right spots to visit. Best advice I can give you is that make sure you are make the necessary bookings and by this I mean you get a good tour operator.
There are so many travel agencies in east Africa and you search for them online. here is a link or registered tour operators and they are very reliable. I am a Native of Tanzania so trust me when I give you these contacts.

They are all registered. I have used Takims, Kearsley and Bobby. and recommended them to a number of my foreign friends and they liked the service. Make sure you go to visit Amboni caves, Ngongoro crater and the Serengeti. Mikumi is great too. Check the same website for all important information that you need to.

Go to this website too:

www.discovertanzania.org

- It provides you with basic information on places and areas that you can visit.

Make good use of the Tanzania Tourist Board Website- it will provide you with information on hotels and Lodging, tour operators with their specialities and contact information, you will be in safe hands the moment you touch down at any airport in Tanzania (Kilimanjaro International Airport and Dar es Salaam international airport)

I hope you have a wonderful trip and you will definitely enjoy.

If you go to Dar don't bother spending more than a couple days there. It's hot, dirty and a lot of people. The markets are interesting as is the coastline. Fly over to Zanzibar for some real Arab culture. You must see Ngorongoro Crater. Choose a lodge and stay for 2 days at least. Spend a couple days in Serengetti at a minimum. Lake Manyara isn't that great. Instead head on over to Tarangire. Very unique in many ways. If you want real adventure head down to Selous, Tanz. largest park. Very remote and wild. Take plenty of sun screen and repellent. Be sure to take maleria profilactics. Start 2 weeks before travel as per your doc. Learn how to count in Swahili so you can bargain. Enjoy. These are very nice and polite people!

you go, and you will NEVER regret.
just go with a reputable agent as in Africa, if you are alone, Africans will try to take advantage on you. (money wise)
may be go with one of the "off road" operators like drifters or kumuka.
it will be fine, and there is nothing 4 u 2 worry about
n.b: consider a visit to zanzibar
