I have my music player connected to my computer and the speakers work ok but make a buzzing noise when not in use. Can it be that the cables are plugged in a opposite way??? Help!!!

Yes, it could be the polarity...switch the + and - and see what happens (it won't hurt anything).

Also, make sure your connections are tight and plugs are pushed in all the way.

Could also mean your system is not grounded (are you using 3-prong plugs?)

Are your speakers near any other electrical devices that may be causing interference? Most speakers are designed to work with a line level signal and having your source volume turned up too high can cause noise. Try turning your volume down on your music player to the lower third. Also some less expensive speakers with built in amplifiers just tend to be noisy when they are turned up and there is no input.

Buzzing in the sound system is typically caused by 2 things...

Electrical interference..

Do you have power supplies, or power cables near your speaker cables? Or perhaps the adaptor that powers your speakers is bad.

or

Bad connection between your wires. (Bad wires)

You can't plug in speakers the wrong way. They will work.

So, move any electrical type wires such as power cords, power adaptors or power supplies away from your speakers and the speaker wires. If that doesn;t work, your power adaptor is either bad or your wires are bad. In the worst case your speakers are bad... Try your speakers on a cd player or something else.
