*Baby clothes are nice. Try getting something in the 3-6 month range. They probably already have enough newborn, and 0-3 clothes already.
*Baby wipes, lotion, wash, washcloths, hooded-towel, infant tylenol drops, spoons- make up a gift basket.
*Maybe a baby toy for when the baby is older, like teethers, rattles, crib toys, etc. Board books are nice too.
*Photo frame- Baby's first year, newborn frame, first bath, etc.
*Get the mom a gift certificate for a massage, make-up, salon, etc. Everybody's focus went from the pregnant mom to the new baby, and now she's probably feeling a little left-out. Baby won't remember any gifts, but the mom won't forget.

You can never go wrong by picking up some of the necessities like diapers wipes etc. Another great and helpful gift idea is to pick them up a meal or two from someplace like dream dinners or my girlfriends kitchen. That way they don't have to fuss too much in the kitchen and can focus on bonding and getting used to being parents.

A nice cheap way to go is a simple layette outfit. A onesie and a pair pants or a thing of diapers. I really liked the diaper gifts when I first had my son.

Make her family a nice casserole in a disposable tray(she will not have to remember who to return the tray to and will not feel rushed to rturn it) ... Make something that will freeze well for later use if thy receive alot of food... Deliver it a few hour before dinnertime so they can decide whether or not they will eat or freeze and they are not already making dinner...
Something like tuna and noodles with a package of frozen vegetables would be great...

All good questions, any thing for the baby. Even more so don't forget about the mom. Buy a little gift for her, or if you can't afford it, offer to watch the baby while she takes a shower, the one gift we as mothers never can get to with a newborn, she'll love you for it! Or go over and do dishes, make beds, or vacuum, anything!!! Thanks for thinking of others!!

Get clothing for a size or two bigger than the current size...often new parents receive a lot of 0-3 size clothes, but not much for beyond that or 3-6 months. Get useful things like bibs, onesies, cloths, even crib sheets are things that you can never have too many of (trust me).
The idea of a casserole is awesome, and I was going to recommend cooking a meal at home or premaking one that they can easily heat up for themselves. With a newborn, hot tastey meals are a rarity at times, so that would be very much appreciated.

A case of Pampers Swaddlers, size 1 (skip the newborn diapers!) would be perfect and well recieved. Parents of newborns can never get enough diapers!

I am a new mother and I 'll tell you what I appreciated....DIAPERS, WIPES, and GAS DROPS. If you want to give something from the heart....Make some sort of dish or goodies. It is nearly impossible to cook a meal for the first few weeks!
