The war really started on April 17, 1775. The Declaration of Independence was signed by some, but not all of the final signers on July 4, 1776.
It was a result of the Governors of the Colonies not listening to the concerns of the colonist, and the Parliament in London not listening either. There was much corruption on behalf of the tax collectors for the Crown.
Most of the colonies had complaints against the Crown so war was declared.

They were really annoyed by the English, especially since they were taxing the colonists for a war that they helped Englnd fight. These acts led to the colonists desire for thier independence which led to the American war of independence... you can prolly find more at wikipedia.org under American revolution
