For instance: I work in Manhatten but I can't afford to live there so I reside in Brooklyn...a nice area that's still within the reaches of the city (about 25 minues by train) but more reasonable in rent. What would be an equivilant neighborhood in London? Please don't say Leeds.

North London.
What the previous user said; Belsize Park or Hampstead, but also Muswell Hill and Hornsey. These areas are lovely leafy suburbs near the city center.
Don't go to far East, cause the prices are lower, but the crime is higher. And further West prices just sky rocket.
Don't go South of the River, it's not to nice.
Zones 2-3 are a shorter distance to travel to work, (city center is zone 1) but the rent will be higher.
Zones 4-6 will have cheaper rent, but will take longer to travel.
