I have to write and essay about "Thank You M'am" and it takes place in the 1980s and i need to know.Pease any answers you can give would be good ASAP! Thanks!

Yes. It was in the late 1970's that the need for such programs really started taking root. While there were a few programs available in cities in the 1970's, it became much more common in the 80's, as more and more children were from homes where wither both parents worked, or one parent families.

Most YMCAs offered an after school program in the 1980s (at least in California).

Far more than today...all kind of clubs....language, chess, math, science, photography, etc. Not to mention sports...and there were buses to take everyone home after their extra-curricular activities which you don't see much of today.
