It is actually to protect both the trees and the horses. The horses will chew bark off the trees, and also risk injury if running and playing around them. Kentucky breeders are dealing with millions of dollars of investment into those babies, and they certainly don't want them injured while playing outside.

Keeps the horses from stripping the bark off the trees or from hurting themselves...

once heard of a horse who came out of his trailer to his brand new home. Owner had not yet insured him but the vet was on the way to do the check up. Horse (young one) got excited about being able to run in the pasture, hit a mud puddle, slipped and slammed into a tree, killing him instantly. TRUE STORY!! Oh, by the way, the man had just handed over 7 MILLION dollars for this horse! OUCH!

Mostly to look pretty - also to help protect the trees I think. The best way to keep a horse from chewing on the bark of the trees, keep hay/grass in front of them....the only other reason I can think of to have a fence around a tree.

The fencing is to keep the horses from eating the bark off the trees. Sometimes horses do this out of boredom or even sometimes they may be lacking something nutritionally. Sometimes this behavior is known as "cribbing"

Some animals, horses among them, like to use trees for back scratchers. This protects the trees, and the horses coats.
