I had a guy come over and give me an estimate, he said that I needed a chimney relining and it would cost 1600 bucks. I just want to know if anyone knows if this is a fair price or if anyone has had an experience similar to mine.

Is the chimney used for appliances or a fireplace?
If it is used for appliances, consider a liner instead of having the terra cotta re-done. Not knowing your situation, you could have the liner done for as little as 1/2 of you quote.

If you used to vent oil fired equipment up the chimney, then the liner must be stainless.

There is *no* way for us to know! We aren't there to see the condition of your chimney or it's size and we can't know what your local building regulations are. Call at least two other companies to come check your chimney and get their opinions. Did the company that came out give you a written estimate that listed cost and reasons needed for the work? Are they properly licensed *and* bonded? Although almost useless have you contacted your local BBB to see what they have on the contractor(BBB tends to be not too helpful since they only tell you about unresolved complaints)?

I'm not trying to be mean to you but those are the real world steps to find out if you're getting ripped off or not.
