That sounds like a deep paper. I would love to see it when completed if possible.
Anyway, for me to comment on the plot, characters and themes I would sum the movie up by saying I think it was have been a much better book then movie.
The plot is very intriguing. Can we really call it time travel with out actually seeing Donnie going back in time? Or was the movie just one big "second chance"? Butterfly Effect makes the time travel aspect more concise.
The acting in the movie is stellar. It is very clear that Jake Gyllinhaal is a talented actor who is only beginning to show his grown and range in this film. I would liken the Adolescence and education parts of your question to The Catcher in the Rye as a direct comparison to jaded youth.

all i know is i watched part of it late at nite, and it scared to death, that bunny thing freaked me out
