The Byzantine Empire was named after its capital, Constantinople, which is now called Istanbul. The people of the empire referred to themselves as Romans, and fought several wars in Italy. The major factions in the city were the Blues and the Greens, and at their most powerful they even influenced the choice of the Emperor, who wore purple. Religion was also an important issue in the Byzantine Empire, and the iconoclasts fought against the iconodules during the 8th and 9th centuries. When the Byzantine emperor requested assistance to drive the Muslims out of Jerusalem, knights came from western Europe and freed Constantinople from the Byzantines, but the city was eventurally captured by the Turks in 1453.

Well, let's see.
Sometime in the 300's, when the Western Roman Empire was getting weak, the emperor Costantine established the city Constantinople, or Istanbul in today's terms. Among its famous emperors were Justinian, who established a beautiful church called the Hagia Sophia. The Byzantine empire stayed small throughtout its years, as they knew that was one of the problems of the Western Roman Empire. They fought many battles with Persia, but neither of them defeated each other. Finally, in 1453, the Byzantine Empire was conquered by the Turks in the name of Islam.
There ya go.
Oh. And I hope you learned something, instead of just copying off of these answers.

1-The Byzantine Empire developed of a combination of Hellenistic(Greek) and Oriental (Asian) influences and western Roman (Rome) traditions.
2-The Byzantine's became synonymous with riches and opulence, at a time when the west suffered a long economic decline.
3-The empire was hundreds of years ahead of the west in terms of legal reforms and legislative works. Justinian the Great(527-565 A.D.) wrote 175 laws in his "Corpus Juris Civilis" (The Body of Civil Law).
I can't think of anymore.
