Why don't they introduce laws governing the size of vehicles in each catargory .

A BMW M5 is larger than most mini buses yet it only has four seats the same as a BMW from the early 80's which is similar in size to todays mini , yet the fuel consumption in either car is not a great deal different .

If manufacturers were forced to limit the dimensions of their cars they would have no choice but to make their cars more user freindly in order to get ahead of the competition .

Hey presto you have the world leading profiteers in pollution fighting each other to produce the most economical car !

Everyone knows that the technology to make a car do 300 miles a gallon has been available for years (a small generator can run approx 8 hours on 1 gallon , an electric motor can power any vehicle)

And before the petrolheads start an electric motor can produce more torque and power than any petrol engined car available to the public .

sorry m8 your 300 miles for 1 gallon thing is a little bit alot exaggerated !!!! everything else you said is correct.

i am very interested in why we still use vehicles that are so un-economical. alot of the problem seems to be that the oil companies hold alot of the patents for more economical set ups and on top of this they seem to pull alot of strings in the worlds governments- the more fuel we burn the richer they( oil companies and governments{ hence we are better off} ) become.
the way around this problem seems to me to be
- using different fuels to replace the fuel we use now ( oils from plants or ethanol)
- using water (hydrogen cells)

incidentally, people don't generally realise that the diesel engine was originally designed to run on peanut oil, because this was plentiful in some of the British colonies(for farming industrial etc)

Ok I was wathcing the news about this today, and it said if everyone in the uk stoped using there car the emissions or co2 that it would prevent would be churned out by china or somewhere like that in something like 86 days so in otherwords it wouldnt make a big difference in real terms of pollution I think the government have lached on to it as its another way of makeing money from motorists and keeping green freaks happy whilst penalising everyone else. Also it said to produce 1 of these co friendly cars the production process using much more energy to make it so the car is only economical if it is on the road for a long time

The leading car manufacturers are making more energy concious vehicles. You also have to consider the reason cars are larger things like elbow room and 80% of american's being over wieght little things like that. Can this generator that runs 8hours on 1 gallon of gas produce the electral wattage that is required to power a 640 watt motor..... o darn you almost had it there. It would take an entire refitting of all auto's. The other day I saw a late 50's model dodge on the road. Do you want to outlaw gasoline powered cars.....

The name of the game is energy and its efficient utilization. The fact is that we are in the last phases of individual transportation unless a radical new source of cheap, portable energy is found. Petroleum is not going to be there. The best solution for individual transportation is the sun, but a much more efficient method will have to be developed to make it practical.

Even if we stopped polluting now, it would be about fifty years for the environment to clean out. Legislation will grow more restrictive until only the wealthy can afford individual transportation. Cities are fighting occupancy pollution and reducing those that live and work in the city is mandatory because people are the ultimate source of pollution. Buildings are the single greatest source of pollution.

The use of Hydrogen gas as a future fuel is one of the options to reduce the pollution. The use of electric car might be useful but how to get the electricity? From renewable energy such as solar heat? Should be okey but its the same thing if we use electric cars but the electricity we used coes from the burning of fuel.

Improve the use of public transport and the facilities, more education to people about the importance of using public transport and the public transport should use maybe clean natural gas (CNG). Concession to those who use public transport eg concession for the students, elderly, etc.

Education has to evolve so that the consumer changes his mindset. The pressure would then make a difference. As long as people have some idea that big car means big person and not big ego BMW and the like will continue to make huge profits at the earth expense. Dont buy them. Not hard is it.

-----------
Here are some vehicles you might like. These are made in China. Small electric cars that get over 100 miles per charge, and sell for as little as $6500.

And here are some other ways to get cheap electric cars:

Electric cars reduce pollution even when powerplants burn dirty fuel. This is because electric motors are many times more efficient than gasoline engines - hence, less pollution per mile. The electric car is also the only car that refuels by wire (the electric grid is 95% efficient.) By contrast, gasoline must be delivered by dirty and inefficient trucks to gas stations.

Right, there is an electric car on the market right now that does 0-60 in 4 seconds flat! http://www.teslamotors.com

It is irresponsible to continue to use petroleum, when other, better alternatives are available. Including Hydrogen. Technology is available NOW.
