Get paid for a publication in a journal?
Never.

We do get residuals for the books we publish, but unless the book makes the New York Times best seller list, or is used as a textbook in hundreds of college classrooms, the money is negligible. Plus, those residuals are taxable.

I have a colleague who makes a couple thousand a year because his book is so widely used in classrooms, but he is the exception, not the rule. Publishing is NOT a major source of income for most academics.

Actually, most major journals make YOU pay for the publication. That's why most people who publish work for labs or universities which cover the publishing costs.
