If its a straight stick just park it on a hill and see what gear it take to stop it from rolling. a good engine might roll in high gear but if you're down in low and still rolling you're in deep manure. If it's an automatic you need a compression tester. With a cheaper one just unscrew the spark plug and hold the rubber end over the hole while someone cranks it over. Should read up to 160 lbs if good or at least 110. anything under 90 and you would have trouble starting.

The best way is to use a compression tester and test each cylinder and compare to each other and what it should be according to the manuals. Black deposits on your plugs and excessive blow by are symptoms but not necessarily caused by low compression.
