I always wonder whether what I as a human consider a beautiful cat, dog, panda, etc. would be considered beautiful by other cats, dogs, or pandas. I also wonder how other mammals would define attractive--is is all smell, or is it something else?

I was hoping someone here would have an idea, or lead me to a book, or something.

Philo, I've asked my cats, and they tell me to shut up and bring them more food. ;-)

Mammals and all other animals will chose an appropriate mate based on the other animals genes. By genes I mean the good traits that the animal can pass on to their offspring. If a lion is not healthy his mane grows in smaller, the less testosterone he has the lighter his mane is. Female lions are looking for long healthy dark manes. If a lion has a light short mane he does not have good genes and will not produce as many healthy offspring that can pass on good genes. Attractiveness in humans if rooted in our past and has to do with how fertile one is. Men with big muscles are attractive because they have strong genes, Women who have narrow waists are attractive because they are more fertile and can produce more offspring with good genes. I think that what we think of as beautiful in cats or dogs is not related to what they feel about each other because we are not look to them as mates.

Symmetry is the prime indicator among all animals. Whether it is the arbitrary or " good genes " function of sexual selection. Symmetry indicates an organism free of developmental insults, among other things. This is why you can judge other animals as beautiful. Despite what the relativists, Oprah, Dove soap and some feminists, say about beauty.

PS Sometimes it can appear arbitrary; think peacocks tail.

PPS Start with Darwin's sexual selection theory.

Praise be to Allah Haraam is that for which the one who does it will be punished and the one who abstains from it will be rewarded, if the reason for his abstinence is following the prohibition of Allaah. 'i believe things like " love"(attraction to the opposite gender) is haram too(including loving your own wife/husband).Because it wil never benifit me in the hereafter, since its not a form of worship. And it makes you forget about Allah and hereafter.Noone is worthy of getting more attention then Allah!' 2nd part of your question: You misunderstood! Islam teaches us to be truthful and realistic. Usually, we love because of Allah and we hate because of Allah. Islam teaches us that a male and female can build up a good relationship founded on marriage. All those stories of media and movies are not helpful to make a person comply with the teachings of Islam. We do not say love is halal or haram because it is a feeling. Maybe it is not under control. You can judge what is under control. But people who fall in love are in many episodes away from the cleansed and pure atmosphere. Marriages that are usually good and lasting marriages are those that start at the least affection. That affection grows after marriage and maybe it will grow until the couples continue their companionship at the Jannah. And Allah knows the best! Jazakallah!

It all depends on the type of animal. Usually big, strong, healthy looking animals are attractive to the opposite sex...any strong indicators of health and fitness...and by fitness I mean the ability to reproduce. Sometimes it can be a call or some special physical structure that is deemed as "attractive"...it really varies greatly in the animal world. Sometimes it doesn't really matter...animals just mate when they can and as often as they can...well, in season, of course.

Animals are attracted to each other by means of these things you mention, smell, and that stuff, but as we are on this planet to live, and to perpetuate our races, the characteristics that attract us must be related to our ability to procreate, having fit bodies for such a task and being able to perform decently after having procreated, feeding your offspring, taking care of them, etc. Humans, however, have twisted minds and the strangest things about other humans attract us, but other animals seem to follow the"survival of the fittest" theory. And as far as I know, they don't fuss and complain as much as we do about our significant others.

You can observe other mammals to see what YOU think attracts them, but if you want THEIR definition, you'll have to ask THEM. Good luck with that.
