First off harming them is a violation of the Federal Migratory Bird Treaty Act and also some state laws. Do a search on Yahoo, Type in 'are woodpeckers a protected bird' and you will find some sites to help

We used to have woodpeckers get into the homestead all of the time. i might seize them and take them to a wooded area and turn them loose. The exterminator is a robust thought too. do away with the bugs and then take the fowl for a experience.

This is a big problem in my area too. Purchase large chunks of Suet from your grocery store or butcher, place in onion bags or butchers netting, and hang from several trees. Once they find it they will leave house alone. It lasts a long time. Replace when chunk is small or they will come back. This is the only thing that works.People flip out when the store runs out so you might want to keep extra in freezer.
