Go to a farm supply store and ask for SAHARA. It is a very good pre-emergent herbicide that only needs to be used once per season. Warning, it will kill anything growing (including small trees) and prevent anything from germinating. Good Luck

Two ways: You can get a liquid soil "sterilizer". As mentioned above, Ortho Triox used to be the name--now it's called Ortho Ground Clear. There is also Ortho Season Long Vegetation Killer. The Ground Clear is a concentrate and the Season Long is Ready-to-Use. Round-up also makes an Extended version that lasts 3 months. (If you get the round-up make sure you're getting the Extended version. It's also RTU. All three of these do a good job.

Your other option (if you want to plant something there) is to physically pull the weeds and then use a weed preventer like Greenview Preen. It prevents seeds from germinating but lets other plants live--so if you want other plants this is your choice.

Yes, I lived in the high desert in California and the tumble weeds were everywhere. I used a product made by Ortho, I don't recall the complete name but it started with Tri-ox something. Guarantees no weeds for a year and it worked very well for me. I used it straight and not a tumble weed to be seen for a year at least.
