Just short of refinishing, I wish to get rid of 20 years of grime.
The 100+ year old roll top desk is oak, refinished in 1946. The finish is generally solid. I await advice with toothbrush in hand.

I use a product called Scotts liquid gold it is available at most hardware stores.Wipe it on let dry polish off. Try it before you go through all the trouble to refinish. If is still not what you want then refinish. Liquid gold contains no wax and often it is the wax that affects the finish on furniture not the finish unless it is damaged.

Use a solution of Murphy's Oil Soap , dry thoroughly, and polish with Old English.

Formby's makes a good finish restorer.( antique shops use it)
Some of the water soluble or oily home remedies might go after the rolltop canvas.

You really need a professional restorer. If you do this yourself, you could end up damaging the finish. Consult a professional furniture restorer.

Try Tung Oil.
It is kind of expensive but it is wotrth it. Because the wood is old, you may have to reapply a few times. Good Luck!!!
