RV!!!
All the amenities you want, depending on what size.
You don't even need to stay at campgrounds/RV parks every night, can do so as you want, but if you want to rough it in a pristine area, you can do so easily. You have yout kitchen and bathroom with you where ever you are, no loading and unloading luggage all the time ... it's great!
There are a number of choices:
class C motorhome ... these are the kind that look like a delivery truck ... this is probably the most convenient and cost effective overall, whether you rent one or buy one. It's compact, a it better mileage than the big class A's, but has all you need in it.
class B motorhome .. this is the kind that is like an oversized van ... I would avoid this, except for short trips ...
class A motorhome, these are the big ones you see on the road. These are the nicest, esp the more expensive ones. Depends on your needs, desires, and budget.
fifth wheel travel trailer ... of varying sizes and amenities, they are easy to pull (require a large pickup truck with fifth wheel hitch). A bit tricky to back up.
travel trailer .. a small one can be pulled by an SUV.
Many people purchase a good late model used one, of whatever type they prefer, then sell it at the end of their travel time. Esp. a good idea if you are traveling for a number of months, where rental costs would be prohibitive.

Definitely DON'T get an RV. Not only will you be pulling a very heavy vehicle and eating up petrol, but you'll also have to find places to park it at night. That sounds easy but most RV parks charge for the space and hookup to their facilities. Much better to rent a car. Call around for the best prices for a monthly contract (not all of them offer savings by the month) and be sure that there isn't a charge to drop it in another state. With a monthly contract, it shouldn't cost you more than $20 per day. But they add insurance on top of that which can be up to $20, plus there's an additional charge of $5 each day just to cross multiple state lines. Check first with your credit card company to see if they cover car rental insurance so you can at least avoid the insurance. As far as motels go, Motel 6 or Super 8 are the way to go. They're cheap and cheerful, locations are everywhere and are in some of the more remote locations so you're not stuck driving to the next big city just to find a place to sleep. You can pick up a national guide to their motels at any location so you can plan your next move a few days in advance.

if you can get your hands on a car, the best way bar none, is to use the Hostelling International-USA network of Hostels nationwide. save ton's of bucks, meet ton's of new people, and have the opportunity to stay in some pretty unique places along the way. if you can't get a car, bus is always good, be ready to do some walking however. your call, but either way hostelling is the way to go.

DON'T do any bus tours. You won't get enough time off the bus to see and do everything you want to.
I can't emphasise driving enough! You can stop when you want, bi-pass things you don't want to see, and you're not rushing around every morning trying to get ready before the bus or plane leaves without you!
Take the trip at your own pace, and enjoy every minute of it.
