Aaah but I always thought this a trite song! After all, if you are aiming to leave him/her, then in a fundamental sense that person is no longer your lover any more, surely? You may be going through the motions, but that is about it.....
And, if it is then simply a question of how many ways there are to leave someone, there is in fact only one way: as kindly as you can!

An old school classic is to go to teh shop for a pint of milk... and the rest as they say is history.
I once left a girl i was living with by taking a day off work and hiring a big van for my stuff. Not the mostly manly way of doing things but very effective!!
