Because we have that instinct of not wanting to be alone. The feeling magnifies during night time especially when we are not in a relationship, we feel cold and unloved. Depression was mostly brought about by self pity, not being able to get that certain something we hope for.

Sunlight is a part of it. Another is you're probably not as active, and you're not around as many people. Depression makes you want to socially isolate, but being around people really does help. Pretty much anything that depression compels you to do will end up maintaining a cycle of depression: being around more people / friends, getting excercise, accomplishing personal / academic tasks etc. will all help depression.

One theory is light. If you find yourself getting more depressed as the days get shorter, you may suffer from seasonal affective disorder. There are special light boxes to help with this.

Try turning more lights on and having your home feel brighter. Some people also get depressed more as they tire at night.

Buy some natural light light bulbs. They really help keep the night depression at bay.

I forget the name of the syndrome, but my sister suffers from it and the natural bulbs have worked wonders for her during the night time and in winter.

It might be that you are effected by the lessening of sunlight. Natural sunlight triggers hormones / endorphines in our brains to stimulate positive attitudes (usually). It might be that you need some assistance, perhaps some different type of bulb lighting in your home - brighter? You may want to see a doctor for true diagnosis.
