I'm completely straight, but I really can't figure out why everyone is so homophobic. Could someone please explain this to me?

People fear what they don't understand.

I'm straight, too. Fear, I guess. I predict that one day in the near future, if not already, people will be praising gays for adopting these children who probably wouldn't have a decent life if left to the parents that gave them up in the first place. There is good and bad in every society & culture. I am in favor of gay marriage and adoption by gays. I just moved from an area in Florida that had a high population of gays & can't say I ever had a problem with anyone I was acquainted with or friendly with there. As a matter of fact, many of the gay people who live in this area strive to make big improvements in the community & brought some very nice businesses into the town. Hats off to them.

Who is this "everyone" you speak of? A few idiots that can't form a logical thought hardly comprise everyone.

Incidentally, some of you should learn a bit about your own faith as well as the world you live in... What is natural is natural, and that is fact and not for you to decide. God is no murderer, and referencing a Biblical story that disagrees with you to "prove" you right to people that don't know it and won't read it isn't a very Christian thing to do at all..

Homosexuality is not a preference. 'Tis common in the animal kingdom, and humans are no exception to the rule. Unfortunately, lots of people are homophobic as a result of religious and/or cultural tenets, and contribute to the intolerance and hate that plagues our world.

In my view, it comes from several places.

1) religion. You know, the whole idea that homosexuality is sinful. That scares people. And I know that there are many Christians who absolutely respect and kindly treat gays- but at the same time, any attempts to change them, to me, undercuts that. And you really can't blame any of the ones who viciously hate gays; they really do believe that if we are nice to even one gay, that the world will turn into Soddom and Gomorrah and God will make us pay for living in a society where they let it happen. I dont' believe any of that, but imagine if you were a true believer- I'd probably make the same denunciations. In my opinion, literal biblical interpretations are insanity.

2) The 'lifestyle'. People aren't homophobic- they aren't scared of gay sex (although that might disgust them a little). They're scared of gay culture, afraid that it is harmful for society, etc.. That children raised by gays will grow up to perpetuate it and everyone will eventually turn gay. Seeing masculine lesbians and feminine gay men scares them into thinking gender roles are being turned upside down.

3) Our dehumanizing hatred. A good many people are raising their children up and living their lives to be kind and respectful even while disagreeing with certain belief systems. Unfortunately, there are many who are instilling a belief that it is all right to insult, demean, torture, belittle, physically harm, discriminate against, etc. towards those they don't like/agree with. Just look at these boards! As long as this sort of thing has a few fellows, it stays alive.

There are more, but those are the core ones, for me.

Because people always need something to hate. It is a sad part of human nature. If it's not race one hates, then it's religion, and if it's not religion it's homosexuality and so on. Plus, many people are ignorant, i'm sure if every person that is completely against gay marriages met someone who is gay, they'll realalize that they are people too, and they can be just as kind, caring, and normal as the rest of us. It's just sad, that people can't just judge on personality and what someone has to offer the world.

one day...
hopefully...
we'll have peace...

Would you feel better if they hated you because you were short ? People that want to hate will . If we were all green and asexual , then it would be something else. I am glad I have food on the table when I see those third world countrys that are starving to death . My life is great.

1st of all im straight.....but i think because they refuse to let it into their minds that there is a different way to live. they think between a woman and a man is the only way to be together. i personally dont think being gay is right, but i atleast accept them as people. which is what all people who think that gay is wrong should do. gays are still people, they just prefer the same sex. homophobes need to get over themselves.

It's simple. It's called INSECURITY.

The bottom line is this...if you're in a relationship with someone (whether opposite or same gender), what people next door or in the next town do is irrelevant.

Theres nothing wrong with it. THey're just afraid of something different than they are, or they have serioiusly repressed feelings towards a person of the same sex. The more people tell 'em its wrong, the more they repress it. So its our job as open minded free spirited warm hearted people, to remind the world... that its not the end of the world if you know a gay person
