Step one: stop engaging in conversation. Every time you try and justify anything, it leaves the possibilities open. So, simply end the conversation by saying nothing. Just a blank stare.

Best advise I ever had from a psychologist, and I proved it works. If you are consistent in using step one, step two will be: Rent a moving truck.

"Just slip out the back, Jack
Make a new plan, Stan
You don't need to be coy, Roy
Just get yourself free.

Hop on the bus, Gus
You don't need to discuss much
Just drop off the key, Lee
and get yourself free."*

It's just like the song says; Just Do It! Yet, it's hard to walk away from someone we are attached to and don't want to hurt; but we can't hold ourselves back. When we do, remember we are holding them back too. Just tell your lover that you need to explore another part of your life right now; and that your paths are just not going in the same direction.

Wow! Thank you for this question, because it is what has bothered me for months. I haven't been able to bring myself to be able to leave my lover, while I know I want to be free. What has happened is that because I have not acted on what I know my inner self wants, I have created a physical condition of asthma. Not being able to breath is feeling stifled. Go where your heart leads you before it makes you sick.

Thanks again; and I'm going to just do it, and there must be 50 ways.

If you are a hateful *****, you could go for a joy ride to a place far from home (two cities away) and when you stop at the gas station for drinks or a bathroom, take off and leave him there.

Yes, I have a suggestion... be kind. You owe it to your lover to share how you feel face-to-face. You shouldn't do it in a restaurant... it should be in a private place. If there is property to divide, do it fairly... and when in doubt, be generous.
