I'm an animation student and the college I am at also offers degrees in Graphic Design. It is possible to get a job without one, - a well known artist we met recently said that in the business your portfolio is you diploma- guess you can create a portfolio and show it someplace like cgtalk.com for feedback, but if an honest evaluation suggests additional training is needed then don't waste time dreaming and consider a place like http://www.brookscollege.edu/ (the school I attend) or some other one in your area. The classes I have taken have made me a better artist, more well rounded (as much as I disliked some of the general requirements like public speaking I recognize their worth), the ability to interact with other future great artists, each with different styles and wild creativity and even different focuses (there are fashion designers, graphic designers, interior designers, multimedia designers and animation majors in this school) has really been awesome. We also have had the opportunity to attend events featuring famous artists from Disney and other studios who gave us incredible advice and feedback. We will do internships, all the teachers are working profesionals in various studios and the classes filled in a lot of the blanks in my own self taught knowledge - including subjects I purposely avoided like the legal implications of art, copyright and so on. It is hard to get all of that on your own.
I wish you the best of luck.

Apply at the local newspaper to do ad layouts. Its an entry level job and a foot in the door.
Also apply at Kinkos or a printing company, you can get a lot of computer knowledge there that you're going to NEED as a designer: What file formats are compatable, basic tech support, formatting for print and press-ready products.
That and when you move on, you'll have an "In" with a printer.
The fewer people companies have to deal with, the more likely they are to use your services, most CEO want to just throw money at something to get it done, so you're best off if you learn to deal with the printers(and you can get kickbacks from the printer).
You're going to have a tough time of it if you're not computer saavy and don't know HTML, but you can get by doing brochures and such.
Start a freelance business that caters to small businesses who need advertising & don't have a lot of money.
I went to school(AIS), but frankly I paid WAY too much for it. Your portfolio is the most important thing you'll ever have as a designer. Develop a good portfolio.
You'll need to know your way around at least Adobe CS to get by (Photoshop and Illustrator or other vector program). No worries: They're fun to work with.
Never EVER miss a deadline, especially if you're freelancing.

Im not saying it is good or bad, but on craigslist there are always alot of graphic designers looking, almost begging, for work and do it for a low wage. I don't know if it is just a good way to advertise or a desperation thing. Just something to consider.

My understanding is that graphic design is a highly competitive field and you'll have to be darn good to enter it. School is NOT optional...it's required, and the better school you can afford, the more likely you are to be in a better position to get employment. Don't worry about not having experience... every graphic designer employed at one time didn't have any either. Focus on your education and give it your all... that's what your experience will be.

You probably need some sort of formal education if you want a leg up on your competition...
