His task is to see that the race of men does not fall under the control of the dark lord, Sauron. The destruction of the ring is the means to this end, but it cannot be the only reason he is sent back for it it were he would play a more direct role in its destruction. Gandalf is the embodiment of the holy spirit...he is the intermediary between the divine and mankind. Tolkein relied hevily on his faith in writing the LOTR books.

To unite the world of men against the evil of Mordor, ensure that Arrgorn assumes his place as King. I want to add to ensure that the ring is distroyed, but I think his task was to make sure that Frodo got the ring and went on his way...have you seen the extended version of the Two Towers?

Read the books and you will understand. The books are fantastic - the movies suck. They're boring, corny and the characters are totally lame. Elijah Wood is AWFUL as Frodo. Besides the fact that I hated the movies, they actually missed out some of the best bits, so you should read the books even if you did like the movies.

His task was to help the Fellowship of the Ring destroy the damned thing. So he couldn't officially die until that was done.
