Just over a year ago some old friends came to see me. We spent one day out riding horses when one of them bolted and took off, rider and all through, a dense growth of trees. the owner of the horses took of after them and managed to ge thte horse back under control, when they returned his skill was commented on and his response was, "Yeah, 'Thank God I'm a Country Boy'". That night we broke out the Karaoke machine and, as I often do, used the opportunity to work out a few emotions. One of those old friends is a Girl named Anna, a gymnastics coach in Russia, and someone that I have, on more than one occasion though about becomeing seriously involved with. The first song I did that night was Freddie Fenders version of Secret Love, followed by John Denver's Annie's song. The night before she went home she said to me, "If you ask me to, I'll stay." I realized then that t couldn't ask. All I could offer her were poems, prayers, and promises, but nothing to warrent her staying. It's odd, if I didn't love her so much, I would not have hesitated to have her give up everything for me, but then if I didn't love her so much, I probably wouldn't ahve wanted her to stay as much as I did. The day she left, I stood at the airport gate thinking goodbye again, my sweet lady as I watcher her leaving on a jet plane, wondering if I would ever see her again. I know I did the right thing letting her go....I just don't know why the right thing has to always feel so wrong.

Annie's song is the best song, such a sweet lady. She has the greatest poems, prayers and promises. Even laughs when I scream at the top of my lungs "Thank God I'm a country boy." It is a sad day though, we must say goodbye again, because tomarrow I'm leaving on a jet plane.

Well, I'm leaving on a jet plane. My sweet lady is waiting for me! I will give her poems, and prayers and promises of my love. Maybe I will write her a song and call it, "Annie's Song". Thank God I'm a country boy and I can express myself! Well, it looks like my plane is crashing......Goodbye Again!!!!!!!

It’s a little-known fact that singer Willie Nelson had a passionate love affair with photographer Annie Leibovitz. She loved his music, in fact that’s what drew her to him in the first place. When Willie discovered that he said “Thank God I’m a country boy!” She inspired a lot of his music -- once he confessed to his sister Bobbie “You know, Angel Flying Too Close to the Ground is Annie’s song.” Unfortunately their relationship was too fragmented to work out because they were both on the road too much. “Goodbye again, my sweet lady,” he said. “Keep my poems, prayers and promises with you, because I’m leaving on a jet plane.” Such a sad story.
