The female symbol is a circle on top of a cross. I think this has definite archetypal meanings in Jungian psychology.

Carl Jung was a very religious man, and the cross indicates the fact that women, on average, tend to look to their religion for succor, support, answers, etc. than do men, at least in Christian countries, where the cross has important religious significance.

The circle may represent the cycle of life. One is born, lives, and dies. It is women who create the new life (with help from men, so far). Moreover, the circle may be symbolic of the womb, or vaginal cavity.

I think it would be very interesting to hear Jung speculate about both the male and female symbols. Like all of the founders of psychology, his methodology was non-existent, and his theories are all based on speculation and "intuition." That doesn't mean that he was wrong, necessarily. But, in light of modern science, most of us feel more comfortable with empirically-based theory.
