First lesson: Baby is a she or he...not an it.
Second lesson: Follow all instructions of the parents. If you are to let the baby cry or pick her up when she cries. Ask. Some parents prefer to be consistent.
Third lesson: Sing to the baby, walk around with the baby in your arms, and read to the baby... provided the parents have no objections.
Fourth lesson: The baby may sleep the whole time or want to play... find out from the parents what they want you to do.

18 month olds are suprisingly smart. Suprise them; but don't scare them. Flicking the lights on and off, or letting them do it. Coloring/drawing, even though it might not look like anything to you, it's their masterpiece. Gluing, if you put dots of glue, the baby should be able to follow you're directions to put tissue paper, or whatever on the dot. You can play hide and seek with them. Even if you just hide a toy. Language is a big thing for some children, rhyming songs and learning is fun for them. Sing ABC's, pat-a-cake, be silly. Run around and be crazy. (within reason). Just make sure to have them calm and ready for bed when it's time. That's the hardest transition for me to make. I guess the most important thing is to use your imagination.

depends on the child and the time of day you are doing the babysitting.
ask mum what he/she likes most, ( mums will usually leave you with a list of things to do / feed child with )
child may cry and want mum, distraction is the key. Be prepared to play with child, hold child , watch silly tv shows.
Make sure that the child has its fav toy/ stuffed animal when it sleeps.
Stick to the routine the mum suggests as much as possible
if babysitting during the day ask mum if you can take baby for a walk in the pram as they always like this and it helps them sleep.
good luck

Awwww That is such a cute age. They love it if you sit on the floor with them and play repetitious games like peek a boo...pat a cake...or block towers that they love to smash down....or ball roll...chase a truck. If they cry some hugs, cuddles of reassurance. Smile lots and talk to him lots in a loving way and you'll have a new bud.
