If D is another hard drive and not an optical drive, then you can and should defrag that too.

Defragging a HDD is actually over-rated and only done by hardcore enthusiasts or people who are looking for a free performance enhancement that doesn't really exist.

As someone else mentioned, it moves the files your application use into logical chunks on the HDD, over time they become fragmented as some will use paging for example. In effect, as these expand at unexpected rates they cannot stay in the most logical place and need to find space where they have the room to perform, hence fragments. I like to describe it as walking into a super market and looking for a multipack of coke, but the cans are not all in the drinks section and are spread through out the store. (each IT muppet has their own analogy for this) :)

Everytime you do ANYTHING on your pc, fragmentation will occur. Deleting, installing, copying etc.

It is a waste of time, the time it takes to run a full defrag you can format, install OS and all software with clean install, defrag this basic setup, create a ghost image of it on a seperate HDD and resintall the ghost image 10 times over before the original defrag of the PC with loads of crap on it is complete.

Oh did I forget to mention the performance enhancment is neglegiable at best, bottom line if you ask me is don't bother. If you are looking for a perfomance increase then upgrade or format.

Defrag sorts data on you're drives into logical units.

This means that (for instance) a single executable file can be spread across many parts of your hard drive. To use this file whilst it is spread takes time (imagine running between 500 postboxes to collect 1 letter), while a defragmented file runs MUCH faster as it does not have to be read from many different sources (only one postbox to look in). Defrag your drives (whether programs or data) regularly for best peformance of your PC. This applies to EVERYONE!

It may be another partition on the same drive. I think that Compaqs have a "reserve" on the hard drive so you can recover your operating system. My fiancee's computer was partitioned by the previous owner by Acronis software. Defrag everything!!!!

I say defrag EVERYTHING. I let my rig run all night defragmenting and debugging: C:(boot) F:, G:, and my entire RAID configuration. Before you defrag (some asy after, but I swear before is better), run a cleanup program, or do it yourself. Temp files, internet files, cookies, any dump drives/scratch drives, kill any any shortcuts. All of these help wour machine live longer between complete reintalls. my 2 cents...I want them back eentually;)
