Three meals a day, cable T.V., internet. I mean what is going keep a homeless person with nothing to lose from robbing or raping when prisons are actually an improvement for them? Nothing. Our lawmakers fight harder for rights of criminals than they fight to lower drug costs for our seniors. I for one will not stand for this any longer, who is with me?

I'm not saying prisons are "fun", but I'm sure they beat starving in a New York alley when it is twenty below. I'll bet it also beats being ridiculed pissed and spit on. I know a few prison guards and they tell me just how "tough" prisons are. Do not believe everything you see in the movies.

Well I've often thought that should I find myself alone in life, I'd commit a crime and use prison as a retirement home. Free food, free medical care, no bills. But you can blame lawyers and judges of all stripes that are more interested in having their names attached to a decision cited in law texts for a lot of it. Also that prisoners have lots of time and free libraries that would make many a college student drool.

At least one state has taken steps to add to sentences when prisoners have their many lawsuits judges to be frivolous. Like the prisoner who sued because the other prisoners were hogging the television to watch Rush Limp-Blimp.

I'm always amazed by the folks who think they or their family will never wind up in any kind of trouble. You have also obviously never been in a prison or near one, yet. You are basing your opinions on Hollywood's version. Nobody has a lot of sympathy for prisoners until someone in their own family screws up, and then the wailing starts.

Yes, for a homeless person, why not bust a window and go to jail to be warm and have food? In a small town, that's better than an alleyway or the woods. Have you opened your home to a bag lady lately? Exactly. So where is she supposed to go?

As for lawmakers, duh!!!! Who do you think is wasting all your tax payer's money? Those guys who promise you, the good people, that they will get tough on crime. Well, if they get any tougher, there won't be anyone left on the outside.

For instance, mandatory minimums take away a judge's power to make a decision based on individual merits. A guy gets five years for smoking a joint, period, even if he's a regular dad unwinding after a day at work. He loses his job, his house, his kids, his wife. Or maybe your sister is driving a car that another friend smoked in. She gets pulled over, there's the remains in the ash tray. What, it isn't hers? That's too bad, she's outta here for five years. The policitian's law has told the judge what he has to give her. But hey, you wanted those politicians to get tough on crime, right???

Which ones are you talking about that fight for rights of criminals? In the 26 years my husband has been in federal prison, I haven't seen a single politician want to get NEAR a crime issue unless he could screech about enacting more laws.

My husband has been in federal prison for 26 years, and would give anything to trade places with you, since you think he has it made. Privileges? Internet? He hasn't seen a computer, and doesn't know how a cell phone works. They took away their weights because they didn't want them being stronger than the officers (considering the criteria for female officers in Mississippi, that's a rather low standard).

When our son died, I wasn't allowed to go tell him in person. I had to do it over the phone. Despite the chaplain intervening and people raising the money for a fed marshall escort, the warden refused to let him go to the funeral.

Does he have a murder conviction? No. Did he molest any children? No. Did he beat up old people? No. He was convicted on a drug charge. Period. 41 years for a drug charge.

Three meals a day....pure crap food. Medical care? There's one doctor there for 2000 inmates. Diabetic inmates die waiting outside the med unit. If you have a heart attack, you are dead. Again, no one cares until it's their dad or uncle or brother or son.

it IS Hell on earth. Try 24/7 rap music, nonstop. Cable? It's not like it's on the channel of YOUR choice. Majority rules.

Most of the guys would love to have SOMEthing to do other than walk the track and waste the taxpayer's money along with their lives. Any kind of education. Rather than sap the system as they age and have medical problems, the old guys just want to go home. But prison doesn't rehab or reform. It;s simply a warehouse to keep the "bad people" away from the "good people."

Because we have let our government railroad us into becoming a bunch of softies, bleeding hearts. You make a good point, being an improvement for them. It is and improvement to many of the convicts looked up. I used to be a correctional officer, and had many of inmates tell me they never had it so good. The constitution of the United States, one incarcerated you loose all rights as a citizen until time is served. Thanks to our government this has been changed , it now cost the tax payers and average of $36,000.00 for each prisoner, and they have more rights than you or I. I say change the law back to what it was, and make the prisons self supportive. We had better do something and fast the prisons are way over populated. We should name all prisons, Easy Street, because this is what they are.

ask any prison guard or police officer who Ruiz is and you will find out exactly why they are treated so well!!!!! (you will also get an ear-full of just how much Ruiz is hated)

in Texas, inmates are not allowed internet access. they are only allowed very limited computer access IF they are in a special educational program that is about computer usage/repair.

if you have ever eaten jail or prison food, you would realize that the three meals a day is more of a curse than a benefit.

Ruiz was an inmate that sued for civil rights, etc. and won.

They get sweet health care, too. My mom works at a hospital and occasionally, often, actually, a prisoner will come in for some work and it is not he who pays the bill. The tax payers also pay for the guards that stand watch at his hospital room, regardless of how old or sick/injured the convict is. I don't feel that a 70 y/o man needs two 24 hour guards while in the hospital for heart surgery.

This isn't going to sound like something you can agree with. But I actually mean it. I'm not just trying to pull your leg.

We actually have quite a bit more contempt for each other than we do for the criminal population.
Confused?
I'll give you a clue.

Criminals actually show pretty good motivation, initiative. They really try to "make something of themselves". The wrong thing perhaps. But they're still very driven to jump for the things we measure as real tokens of success.

We admire the criminals, despise each other.

If it makes you feel better though.

Just call it STATE paid prostitution. We cannot waterboard our domestic criminals. So why not fund them a little for providing the intregue of gay sex rough-style. You have to pay criminals for providing that "amusing" shock and awe service to the incarcerated population.

I don't believe the answers to your question. If it's so great,
why do all try to get out or get parole?
Try spending 3 days in a tiny room, with a toilet & a cot & see
how great it is. Remember, you can't leave the room unless
you are allowed. Probably 1 hr. a day, in some prisons, that's
1 hr. a week & 1 shower a week.
But, I must agree, the lawmakers really should fight harder for
lowering drug costs to seniors. These pharmacutical companies
are getting away with robbery.

Because, like it or not, they are still human beings. However, I believe the punishment should fit the crime. Someone who has stolen to feed their family shouldn't suffer the same consequences as someone who has raped or murdered. So I would assume your question is more directed to hardened criminals who would never apply themselves to be productive members of society. And I agree, it's a crime that our lawmakers aren't doing more to provide lower prescription drugs to our elderly. But I don't see THEM doing hard time.

Most people prefer the freedom of not being incarcerated. That's the basic thing that's taken away, and it's a big one.

Cable TV and three meals doesn't seem to compensate for living in a 5X12 room, no privacy, at the mercy of whatever gang is in charge of the prison, no physical safety. Doesn't sound like fun to me.

I'm with you. Let's not forget the shortage of correctional officers due to unsatisfactory working conditions and pay; around here there is sometimes one guard locked in with a hundred or more inmates, and no weapon, and he might get frozen on his shift because the next guy calls in sick.

It's time to cauterize the wounds of the bleeding heart liberals and start treating criminals with exactly what they deserve - hard time. And while they're at it, they can go back to breaking up rocks on a chain gang or making license plates.
