Usually a D drive is an optical drive like a CD/DVD Rom which you cannot defrag. However, there are people out there with multiple internal hard drives so it is possible your D Drive is another hard drive. To find out, just double-click on "My Computer" and look for the D drive. It will be under "Devices with removable storage".

it quite is a abode windows-particular term. For some extraordinary reason, Microsoft keeps to apply letters to call it quite is drives. It made greater experience returned while a: and b: have been floppies and c: became the complicated force and there have been not greater drives. The D: force could nicely be extraordinarily much something, there isn't any way we can comprehend what it is on your computing device yet CD is the main in all risk.

My laptop has a C drive and a D drive which I believe is actually a partition of the hard drive set aside for important backup information etc. Normally you don't use the D drive, just leave it alone and let the computer take care of it.

To find out for sure:
Right click on My Computer
Select Manage
Select Storage from the right hand window
Select Disk management - again right hand window
Look at D: if it is labeled as a disk then it's a part of your main hard drive - if it's called cd rom or dvd then that's self explanatory.
You get a proper answer this way!

Most likely, if you are like me, the D: drive is the repair partition, meaning the backup system files in case you need to reset your system. It is a partition, meaning it is in your main hard drive, but is "set aside" from the rest of the disk, and you should not need to modify it at all. Unless of course it is another harddrive in your computer or a cd drive, in which case disregard my answer. you can find more information on partitions at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disk_partitioning

It's usually the CD or DVD drive on your PC.
EDIT: I don't know why some idiots have given me the thumbs down - D drives are more often than not the CD/DVD drive!
I am aware that it does depend on your PC - but to be frank this question is not really very clear.

your pc can have up 26 different drives all as partitions on your hdd drive if you only have one hard drive there may be a partition on it that comes up as d drive.
d drive is normally your cd/dvd drive if you have 2 cd/dvd drives then the second one would be drive E
drive A =floppy disk drive
drive C hdd/hard disk drive can be partitioned into upto 26 smaller drives lettered in alphabetical order
drive D normally cd/dvd
drive E second cd/dvd or external storage device.
the maximum amount of drives you can have is 26 in a combination of floppy/hdd/cd/dvd/flash drives or external hdd .

although it may be a CD drive, it might be an emergency partition of your disk from which your computer stores emergency information that it doesn't think needs to be taking space on your C:/ drive

It's probably a partition of your hard drive. That means physically, it's part of your C drive, but software has been used to make your operating system (e.g. windows) think it's two seperate drives.
