China's diverse climates affect where people live. They have to be able to earn a living farming.

The vast majority of China's people live south of Shanghai. In this part of China, people rather than machines do most of the work. Rice is the dominant crop, and rice farming requires more labor than other crops. Farmers have learned to use every bit of land possible to feed the large population. The warm climate of southern China allows farmers to have two and sometimes three harvests. Farmers have learned to use every bit of land possible. Hills are often ringed with terraces in order to create more farmland.

Wheat is the most common crops of northeast China. The land is similar to what you might find in Kansas in the United States, but is much more crowded. Where one family might live on a farm, in northeast China you will find an entire village of several hundred people. North China's severe winters limit the growing season to about half the year.

Western China is less populated than Eastern China. West of the wheat fields is the Gobi Desert. Very few people live on this barren, rocky land. Many people who live in this part of China are nomads who raise cattle, sheep and goats. Many continue to live in felt tents called yerts, while others live in simple clay homes. The Himalayas begin their rise south of the Gobi.

Oh, come now. You could do three just in your own head, although you probably should check wikipedia for confirmation.

China has one long coastline: the east coast. And coastal areas become developed and cities form more toward the coastal areas first, because travel by water is enough easier, and especially moving cargo is enough easier on water. So it happens early in any old civilization's history, and China is very, very old. I'm not sure anyone really knows how old, but I'm sure National Geographic's web site could help you there.

Anyway, that's one reason. Now another reason is equally obvious if you look at a map. You get coast, and then eventually you get mountains. And crossing mountains, especially really high ones, is something people don't do if they don't have to, at least until technology starts to make it relatively easy. A few trade routes with, we are told, historically interesting war-lord type histories, and that's about it. Contact between coast and interior past the mountains is therefore a relatively recent thing. And because the people near the coast had easier trade opportunities, they become more cultured and educated and so forth than did the interior, where the Mongol hordes held sway for quite a long time. People get somewhat edgy and mistrustful of strangers under such conditions, and that kept the contacts limited, too. Then, too, there are always power trips various king-of-the-hill types play out. You don't even have to know what continent we are talking about to know that happens. War-lords is my generic term for this phenomenon, and it certainly fit in China for a long, long time.

Have I given you three yet?

Well, the eastern part is the fertile part of China. It has the main rivers, including the Yangtze and Huang He. The rivers in China flow from west to east, mainly because the west is high elevation, with mountains and plateaus. The east, for this reason, has better farmland. The west is very rocky and mountainous, including the Himalayas. The Gobi Desert is located in the northwest. The southeastern area is a rainforest-type climate. All of the major cities, including Shanghai and Beijing are located in the east, and many people live there. So the eastern part is the most fertile and liveable part of China, explaining why most of China's people live there.
