the over drive button that you are talking about should always be on so that the light is out in normal everyday driving. This is what helps the truck get better milage, now when towing it should be turned off. Remember if the light is off the system is on and overdrive is working when needed if the light is on the system is off, this is an automatic system unless you turn it off

Leave O/D on most of the time (better fuel economy)
O/D is overdrive, it is essentially high gear (4th or 5th) depending on transmission.
Turn it off it you are pulling a trailer.
Turn it off if you are going up a steep grade.
Or if the transmission is cycling back and forth between gears.
If you are on the highway and want to pass you may want to turn it off before you accelerate to pass.

the od button lights up when od is OFF you press the button when you are towing

read the owners manual. In most cases...anytime you exceed 45 MPH...unless you are towing something...then wait until you get up to speed then kick it in.
