Basketball was invented by Dr. James Naismith in 1891 as something to do in the gym during winter. I forget what state and city, you'd have to look that up. It started out by hanging peach baskets on the side of the gym walls, one on each end. They started out by using a ladder to take the ball out of the baskets, but then got the idea to cut a hole in the baskets. I think that a sport a little bit like basketball was played by the Aztecs, but basketball as we know it was invented by Dr. James Naismith.

Dr. James Naismith 1891 Springfield, Massachusetts. He worked in a YMCA (Young Men's Christian Academy) trying to find an indoor sprot that wouldn't cause serious injury. did you know that when James asked the acadamy's janitor fo two bread baskets for he didn't any so instead he said all he had were peach "baskets", James said it would work so thus, the hoop was there. and did you know that orignial basketball nets had no hole in the bottom. you had to pull a string to get it. one day a net broke and they left it. thus, the basketball net was made. well, I could talk about basketball for hours but my fingers are tired. well hoped i helped.

James Naismith invented basketball in 1891. He was a PE teacher and needed a sport for his students to play in the winter, so he took a soccer ball and threw it into two peach baskets where the bottoms are still intacted.
