The reason the British began to tax the Colonies is because of the French and Indian War. The British though that it just made sense to tax the colonies because the war was fought there. The British wanted peace with the Indians so the proclamation of 1763 was created forbidding the colonists from passing the Appalachian mountains. This would not work because the colonists had already created colonies beyond the range. The colonies rejected the first act (the stamp act which put a tax on all things paper) because they thought that England had no right to tax them if they had no one in Parliament. The English repealed repealed the stamp act and created the Quartering act, forcing the colonists to house and pay for the British soldiers. The Townshend acts then came into power forcing the colonies to pay taxes on many popular items like paint, paper, glass and tea. The colonists reacted by boycotting British goods. The Boston massacre happened when a bunch of patriot rioters attacked British solders in Boston and the soldiers shot on them. The townshend acts where repealed and the Tea Act was initiated. This act taxed all the tea imported from Britain. The tea was cheap but patriots took a stand. The patriots dressed up as Mohawk Indians and dumped all the British tea into the harbor. This was called the Boston Tea Party. Then came the "Intolerable acts". These said:1. Boston harbor shall be closed, 2. The destruction of the Charter of Massachusetts , 3.No town meetings in Mass. without British consent, 4. the Boston massacre soldiers were to be tried in Britain, and finally more troops were sent to Boston. The first continental congress was held and when the British attack Concord, the War had begun.
