Funny you should ask. I thought the same thing when Shrek was popular. The story has to come from somewhere right? My 7 year old niece and i went on this little research quest. We found out that ogres do not exist but there are some seriously deformed people in the depths of some 3rd world country, boy i wish i could remember where because this would really help right about now. The deformed are isolated in huts far from the public. I read that there was this one boy that was so seriously deformed, they fed him rotting fruits and goats milk due to the fear of him being non human.
