I can't believe that there are this many people who actually respect George Bush, and think he is doing what is best for this country.

Maybe it's because of where you're from.
In my experience it is common that people on either side hardly know anybody on the other side.
One reason for this, I discovered while working on a political campaign. They did surveys to find out the voters' opinions in different locations. If the other side had a big majority of voters in a certain location, they didn't even bother to campaign or run ads there. It would be a waste of money. They spent their money in areas where they had a chance to win. Understandable, of course, but disturbing because it is bound to increase polarization in the population. A lot of people are just not getting any information that would challenge their views.
