Faulty thermostat?

the temp sending unit is basically a ground unit. It is possible that one of 2 things (the basics but could be something else) is bad. First I would check to see that your wires to the temp sending unit are connected...or connected properly...secondly..it could just be a bad sending unit. On this model there is most likely 2 sending units...one for the electonic/electric components...this one will have 2 wires. the other is for the guage...one wire...check to see that this wire is connected properly.

Ok on this one...a test.

disconnect it...turn the ignition on but do not start the engine. with a piece of bare wire...a straightened out paper clip or something similar will work...have someone watch the gauge while you touch the wire to a ground...any metal on the engine will do...if the guage moves...then the guage is good and the wire is good...if not...then the guage or wire itself is bad. If it tests good then the sending unit itself is bad. when grounded...the guage should move all the way to the hot side...with the wire unplugged and not touching anything...it should read cold.

Hope this helps

I had a 96 that ran hot working hard and/or just idling. I replaced the radiator, made sure the water pump was ok, replaced the fan clutch, the thermostat and nothing seemed to help. I even flushed the engine out.

I gave up and figured the engine block was plugging up.

It had 169K on it. Good luck. Pops

almost all chevys have a floating gas tank, but if it doesnt run out at the same spot on the guage every time you may have a bad fuel sending unit or a bad ground. thats just about all that can be wrong. Good luck with your problem... hope this helps!

$10 says that when you got the new radiator, someone forgot to put the big spring in the lower hose, and it's collapsing when it gets hot.
