If they asked in the past 7 years then you did not lie. If they said have you ever been convicted of a felony or arrested in the past seven years, than that would be a lie.

If it was a felony then I can see the problem, however if it was misdemeanor and you just had regular probation, not FELONY probation or Parole then I can't see what the problem is!
Usually the question on a job app is "have you ever been convicted of a felony?" And if the answer is yes, then you should check it, it may not lead to further job rejections, at least you would have been honest and perhaps given the chance to explain what happened! Criminal history checks are a very popular practice these days when an employer is considering a new employee.

You don't say what this is for. Most employers don't hire people w/ a felony conviction. You could ask them for a written explanation, but you won't get this job.
Next time you want to be up front with your employer from the very beginning. Tell the person interviewing you "the story" so that they understand what happened. For instance, say, "18 years ago, I was young and stupid, and got caught selling drugs. I got a year of probation, and haven't touched the stuff since." Or, "I was young and stupid and got into a fight..." Admit you screwed up, and REASSURE THEM that you're not a head case or security risk.
Whatever your story, practice it with someone who hires people, but isn't hiring you. A family friend, police officer, relative, whatever... just have your story STRAIGHT -- believable, factual, and convincing.
Last thing - you don't need a ton of jobs. This isn't a baseball batting average, or a grade point average. You can get turned down for a million jobs, but if you get a good one on that next try you're all good. Each time you interview for a job that you don't get you learn how to interview for the next one.

You did not lie saying you had no convictions w/i the past 7 years if the last one was in 1988. Those people can't count!! You should go back and point out their error. If they are reasonable they should admit their mistake. Good luck!!

Sound's like you were railroaded. If they ask if you were convicted of a crime in the last 7 year's and your only conviction was in 1988, 18 years ago, you were dupped. Ask them to explain, you didn't lie.

Talk to a someone about getting a copy of your criminal record to make sure nothing appears. If not, speak to a lawyer.
