Maybe because it dealt with how $$ plays a role in our social situations. Poor guy makes good to be with rich girl, but rich girls still don't marry new $$ guy. And poor mechanics wife gets caught up in affair with rich guy and thinks she's moving up but NOT, she is expendable to the rich guy, just a piece of temporary entertainment.
Also , I think, because at the time (1920s), the new $$ was largely from bootleggers and there are stories about the Kennedys & bootlegging.
