Do you know anybody that did? What happened to their home? Did they manage to resolve anything with the bank etc.? My friend is going through this and is wondering what to do to save her home.
She's from southeastern wisconsin and needs a good lawyer.

Some communities have one-time help for people to save their homes. Most don't, but some do, so it's worth checking into ... call social services, and ask anyway.

The primary question here is, how did she get behind to begin with, and does she have enough income to keep up with the monthly payments if by some way she is able to come current?

I was in this situation, and the first time, we were able to make extra income and get current and stay current for a number of years.

The second time, my circumstances had changed, and over the course of 4 years, i missed that dreadful third payment .... I ended up selling my house "as is" so that I could at least realize something out of it (I only had 8 more years to pay on it, but was disabled and unable to work).

She does need to see a lawyer, check into legal aid, but get a consult even if you have to pay for it .. most lawyers will give a half hour consult for a minimal (or no) fee.

Is refinancing a possibility?
The mortgage company really doesn't want to foreclose .. that costs them money ... usually they will help in any way they can that is practicable to do so.

she needs to bring her payments current or she will lose her home .... the mortgage company will put any payments she makes that are insufficient into a suspense account and return that money to her when they assume her property ... there are people out there who will help if she has gainful employment.

Her best bet would be to refinance and get rid of as much debt as possible
