Freedom of speech is the concept of being able to speak freely without censorship. It is often regarded as an integral concept in modern liberal democracies. The right to freedom of speech is guaranteed under international law through numerous human rights instruments, notably under Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and Article 10 of the European Convention on Human Rights, although implementation remains lacking in many countries. The synonymous term freedom of expression is sometimes preferred, since the right is not confined to verbal speech but is understood to protect any act of seeking, receiving and imparting information or ideas, regardless of the medium used.
In practice, the right to freedom of speech is not absolute in any country, although the degree of freedom varies greatly. Industrialized countries also have varying approaches to balance freedom with order. For instance, the United States First Amendment theoretically grants absolute freedom, placing the burden upon the state to demonstrate when (if) a limitation of this freedom is necessary. Almost all liberal democracies, it is generally recognized that restrictions should be the exception and free expression the rule; nevertheless, compliance with this principle is often lacking.

YES - NO. But not in the way you think. In the US our freedom of speech is limited. An example: You are not allowed to yell fire in a public building and expect no reprisal when someone gets trampled to death. You would be charged with involuntary man slaughter. Another Example: If your words prevent someone from being employeed you can be held liable which carries monetary and possibly prison verdits.
Examples of freedom of speach: If I call you an idiot you cannot sue me because I offended you. This is the problem with our political system today. We have moved into a bad time when calling people names is almost criminal. This is WRONG. It will come to a point when ANYTHING you say will be offensive. This would be an overreaching of the law of this land.
OK?

If you did not have freedom of speech you would not be able to ask questions on here without them being censored. You would not be able to say you do not like the government without being imprisoned, You would not be able to have cell phones without them being monitored and interrupted if the government didn't like what you were saying. You would not be able to write a letter to the editor of a news paper if you did not agree with an article. We would not have newspapers with unbiased comments. You would not have TV news without being told what you can and can not say. There are so many more examples. Yes we need freedom of speech otherwise we would have to keep our mouths shut for fear of being shot.

"I have fought censorship all of my adult life. To me, the most precious of all rights in this marvelous country called the United States of America is the freedom to think, write and say whatever is on your mind... That freedom also extends to thoughts that are stupid, ignorant or incendiary. No one needs a First Amendment to write about how cute newborn babies are or to publish a recipe for strawberry shortcake. Nobody needs a First Amendment for innocuous or popular points of view. That's point one. Point two is that the majority-you and I-must always protect the right of a minority-even a minority of one-to express the most outrageous and offensive ideas. Only then is total freedom of expression guaranteed." Lyle Stuart in his introduction to The Turner Diaries
That, to me, is the heart of the matter.

To some extent. Freedom of speech should be like freedom of saying what you belive. But, unfortunately, people say cuss words and say that's freedom of speech. So, yes, we should have freedom of speech, but people just shouldn't take advantage of it and misuse it.
