I grew up in the late 40s early 50s which was the hayday of the Cowboy movies. My brother and I and our cousins would go to the "picture show" every Saturday afternoon. It is one of my very favorite memories
As best I can remember they stopped making the Western genre movies in the 60s when innocent simplicity gave way to let it all hang out examination of a complicated world. A few saga type Westerns were made after that but the Cowboy movie I grew up with was gone into the sunset of our memories.
I am hoping for a revival of the Western genre. There have been some excellent Western Cowboy movies made in recent years. The best of course was Lonesome Dove starring Robert Duval which was made for television but is a classic none the less. More recently Broken Trail also starring Robert Duval was shown on AMC and it is every bit a Cowboy movie of the old style.

Hollywood doesn't think people are interested in westerns right now. When they decide people actually want to see them, then they will make them again.
