My brother lives in a very old house (built in 1890) & it's known to be "visited" by who knows who/what! He & my sis in law got into a fight one night & he spent the night in a bed that's located in a loft off of the living room. Sleeping on his stomach, he was awakened by a strong, steady, even pressure that was pressing him into the mattress slowly. He thought he was going to suffocate. The only thing that he could move was his head. He looked up, only to be looking into pitch blackness- his eyes weren't able to adjust to any light at all. He thought to himself that if he panics, he'll die. He remained calm and after (probably what seemed to be ages!) a few moments, "the entity" shoved him violently once and was gone. I have spent the night there myself and heard footsteps and rattlling doors, that couldnt be xplained. Another brother of mine also experienced what felt like a cat jumping up on (same bed in loft).....the house doesn't have a cat. How does one explain this?

The entity was probably his wife. Sometimes they can be very scary. ;-)
All kidding aside - I don't believe dead people haunt anybody. I do believe demonic spirits can assume identities of dead people and I also believe they are responsible for many of the "real" hauntings.
Tell him to get rid of any symbolisms of evil like Ouija boards, tarot cards, pentagrams and so forth. OH! And some rock and roll albums like Alice Cooper's music anything that is dark or evil oriented.
But by all accounts - most reported hauntings can be debunked. What your brother experienced would be a little harder to prove ONLY if he can validate where his Wife was at the time AND validate that no one else was in the house. Once clearing that hurdle - the only thing left is demonic activity.

Put some sort of recording device in that room and let it record all night. Get a camera and start taking random pics throughout the house. Check pics for orbs. Or if your feeling really brave get a ouija board and start asking some questions about who's in the house (no better not that's a bad idea) better yet a pendulum will have same results with out the demonic forces of a ouija board. Let me know the outcome if you try any of the above.

I believe in spirits. I have never seen one but on more than one occasion I have felt a presence of some sort.
The first thing to do would be to burn a sage stick throughout the house. You can get one in the health food store in their plant section or simply ask the store for one. They don't cost a whole lot and they sort of look like a small part of a tree wrapped together. The smell when lit resembles incense.
The burning stick should clear the house of spirits.
Also, keep angel decoration and bells in the house. Whenever you, your brother, or whomever feel a strange presence ring the bell.
Finally I hope you believe in God. You will have to pray for the spirit to leave and ask God for peace in the house and within your lives. Don't be afraid to ask the spirit to leave and for it to find peace.
Hopefully this should do the trick.

That was Ghost...the unfinished business person(s) use to interfered with our human life cause they jeolous what we can do but they can't. Specially, they think you are trying to take away the house from them.
Ussually, the people who got contact to them was in moment of weaken mind...they will go awayif they see we don't do naything to harm them...they have no mean to harm you either if nothing related in the past.

yes i belive in dead people returning to haunt people. i do bleieve thats called ghosts. andthats pretty freaky. Watch Ghost Hunters on the sci fi channel on wed at 7-9. they try to dissprove presants/ghost appearing its not fake!

echoes... ghosts... its all; the same, they're usually not strong enough to hurt the living, but ill-intentioned entities absorb some of energy from the living so they can be stronger...
relax, those things are pretty common, don't fear them and maybe someday you won't feel them anymore... either that or you'll get used to the presence.
