If you just need to use these letters occasionally, you can use the character map. In ANY application (like Internet Explorer) either hit the Windows key (next to CTRL) or click on the START menu. Choose "Run", and type "charmap" in the box. You will get a pop-up that has every character Windows can display. Click on the character you want (such as á or ¿), and then click "Select". The character will appear in the "Characters to Copy" line. Choose "Copy". Go to your application and paste the character(s) wherever you want. If you only use special characters now and then, this is usually quicker than working with the international keyboard. In some applications (like Word) you can also use "Alt" commands to get accented characters (see link below). This method won't work in all applications.

you have to insert the character. Click on insert and then go to symbol, then find the character you are looking for. It can be a pain.

Sometimes you have to go back and load more from your disks for your programs to be able to type with the Spanish Accents. When I was in Spanish class I downloaded an excellent freeware open source word processor and could set it for either Spanish or English. I had to load the word processor first then load the Spanish part but it worked great. I may be able to find it we are trying to remember what it was right now and how to do it as it required a little searching around for it and setting it up. A programmer in class told us about it works great.
The open source word processor name is Abiword from Abisource it works really good I used it for two semesters and awhile afterwards but when my computer crashed again I did ot bother to reload it as I stopped writing a friend who went to jail for drinking too much who spoke only Spanish who got out sobered up finally but you have to really look around to find it to down load it then you have to add the additional package for Spanish then set it for Spanish when you use it I think each time but it is the easiest method to use. There is also a combination you can do to type the characters you need over the letters I may be able to find that I am looking around right now. I usually write by hand in Spanish so I can add the accents etc. and I do not write that much anymore since I am not taking classes right now. I had some difficulty finding the Spanish plug in possibly it is included in the word program now I am looking around but it worked excellent a programmer told us about it in class and helped me figure out how to download it by emailing me etc.
There are many servers who carry Abiword for downloading it is open source and worked very well for me. So well I used it for all wordprocessing instead of Microsofts bigger dinosaurs.
The plug in for Spanish takes a little looking around it is Ispell and on another page then you may have to read directions to download it but the ease of use is worth the trouble of downloading and learning the program I loved it but since I had such a time finding it I never bothered to again and forgot the name.

I included two from this forum there are more
Simple: there are at least three ways for PC users...the ALT key + numbers,
The extended ASCII character sets, and configuration of your kb and resident software. For MAC users like me, it's even easier, just hit the opt key plus a letter, then type the letter to be accented. It's a bit like the 'dead' key on an old manual typewriter I used to use for Spanish papers when I was in college.
I believe you can use the search facilitiy here to find a thread with a good explanation of the PC methods, right here in the forum. For lists and tables of the exact keystrokes, just go to a search engine and type something like
"foreign language characters". That will give you lots of sites, most put up by U.S. universities, with explicit instructions.
If you use a Mac, for example, you type opt+e, the whatever vowel you want to get an acute accent: á é í ó ú. The ñ is just opt+n, then n, or a if you want ã in português.
Let me know if you have trouble finding the sources.

The first way only works for PC Windows users as far as I know. It certainly doesn't work for us Linux users, though the other 2 methods do.
There is an entire table of special characters that can be put in
on this webpage along with how to add Spanish to your 95 or 97 program probably works for later editions also

7. The computer will prompt you to insert your original Windows 95/98 CD-Rom.
Follow the instructions on the screen until the download is completed. The
new language keyboard layout (Spanish—Modern Sort) should be installed
on your computer.

It has been about two years since I used this and I am no longer online on my computer as we are on cable with only one computer up and running online so far so I may just ask my dad to download these to a disk so I can put them on my computer again as it was great to use and worked very well. This is open source you can find information about it around the internet to learn how to run it was very simple from what I recall but if you have dial up it may take awhile to download so pick when it is a good time to download.
